Bordeaux vs Meritage-Style Wines
In 1981, the United States began producing wines that were patterned after French Bordeaux wines and these wines were given the name “meritage” (rhymes with heritage). To use the term, the wines must be made from the same grapes as in Bordeaux (a blend of cabernet sauvignon, merlot, cabernet franc, malbec, and petit verdot for the reds; sauvignon blanc, semillon and muscadelle for the whites). We will taste wines from both Bordeaux and the United States and try to determine which wine is from where. We will do this as a “blind tasting,” with the wines “brown bagged” to conceal their identities until we taste them. Join us for not only an informative, but also a fun evening of wonderful tastes.

Wines of South Australia
Shiraz! Cabernet Sauvignon! Chardonnay! Riesling! Barossa Valley! McLaren Vale! Coonawarra! Clare! Eden Valley! What great wines from South Australia! This is Australia’s largest wine-growing region, and probably the one most familiar to us in the United States. It covers many climates and wine styles, including some of the very best wines in that country, if not the world. Come with us as we explore this fantastic region from “down under.”

Wines of South America
Speaking of wine values, you cannot discuss that topic without mentioning the wines from South America, specifically Chile and Argentina. We will include wines from other South American countries if we can find them, but our main focus will be on these two. We all know about the value wines from Chile, but did you know that they also make wines that can compare with any in the world? And some say that Argentina’s wines will rival, if not surpass, Chile’s in the not-too-distant future. Join us for this taste adventure!
